About The Wirruna Estate |
Wirruna Estate vineyard is located on the shore of Lake Hume in north east Victoria, Australia. Wirruna is a boutique winery specialising in three varieties - Shiraz, Marsanne and Durif. The vines enjoy hot dry summers, when temperatures soar to 40+ degrees Celsius (104 + degrees Fahrenheit ) and cold, dry winters with many nights below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) The bottle label shows the view overlooking the vineyard at sunset, hence the name "Wirruna" - an aboriginal word for sunset . The vineyard was established in 1997, when we planted 2,500 Shiraz and 500 Durif vines all grafted on Californian rootstock. In 2000 we planted a further 500 Durif and 2000 Marsanne vines, all grafted on Californian rootstock. Netting of all vines commenced in early 2004, to prevent bird problems. This has proved to be an invaluable asset on such a small vineyard. Our grapes are hand picked in March/April of each year. Many friends join us over three weekends to help us with the vintage. It's hard work but usually a good time is had by all. The wine is made on site at the Wirruna Estate by the owner/winemaker - John Woodhouse, then matures on French Oak for 12 months.
